Rwanda Rwamatuma Peaberry Washed
Background
Our 2nd Rwanda on the list , another beautiful coffee & a little side step in the cup from Rwanda Liza Anaerobic……This is also the first time we have sourced from these guys BUT will definitely not the last ! Peaberry ? Are estimated to make up around 5 – 10 % of a harvest , they occur as a result of a natural mutation or defect inside a coffee cherry, where one ovule fails to pollinate. This results in an extra space for the single developing seed, within this space a larger and rounder seed grows inside. this is peaberry…….
Rwamatamu Coffee ltd is a family business owned and operated by Mukantwaza Laetitia and Rutaganda Gaston, who have been in the coffee sector for 13+ years. They founded Rwamatamu in 2015 aiming for a financial gain but also contribute to fight against poverty in rural communities through harvesting coffee.
With 20 hectares of coffee plantation from where it harvests its own cherries but also purchases cherries from affiliate co-operatives and local producer families and smallholder farmers. These cherries from different sources are separately collected, processed, sundried, sorted bagged and eventually exported as a premium product.
Rwamatamu’s Coffee has been sold not only in the USA but also in Sweden. Rwamatamu coffee ltd also participated and was greatly qualified in « Cup Of Excellence » coffee competition.
The coffee farm and washing station are located in the Western province of Rwanda, where the landscape consists of picturesque rolling hills flanked around Lake Kivu in Nyamasheke District.
This region provides a tropical highland climate with an average temperature of 14 to 24 c and regular rainfall. This makes arabica coffee to flourish and result in a dense, hard bean with superior coffee flavour.
The farm is positioned on 1600 up to 2000 meters altitude, on a rich volcanoes soil. The harvest season is January to March.
Coffee from Rwamatamu is fully washed with spring water, sun dried and handpicked to a high standard. Currently they are in the process of gaining their organic and fair-trade certifications. They work to have a positive social and economic impact on farmer communities, focusing on women in particular.
Rwamatamu’s Passion
Rutaganda Gaston realised many years ago that sustaining a business relies on good relationships. These days, the whole Rwamatamu Valley community adores and supports him, because all his transactions embody mutual respect, and a fierce passion.
This passion is something Gaston has passed on to his daughter, Marie Bernice, who has supported her family’s work by translating negotiations, creating educational materials, and managing marketing. On top of all this, she moved to the UK to earn a degree in project management that has given her even more insight into the industry.
The cornerstone of Rwamatamu is family working together. It’s what bridges the gap between Gaston and Laeticia, and Bernice and Luke; partners working together to provide for their family and the community they love.
Values
Rwamatamu work together with cooperatives of coffee farmers who live in the area. 80% of their employees are women. Their goal is to build healthy relationships with the community based on common values and goals. This is done by committing to a regular purchase of beans and investing in the growth of employees. They also commit to a set standard of quality each year.
